Necrozma
Necrozma (Japanese: ネクロズマ Necrozma)
Necrozma, a vaguely humanoid Legendary Pokémon, consists of a dark crystalline substance. It features a pronounced tail with three large spikes and a dark gray emblem resembling an eight-pointed star on its head. Its facial area contains a prism-like structure called the “brain prism,” filled with multi-colored segments mimicking eyes, which glows white when absorbing light. Necrozma’s slender arms end in disproportionately large hands with three claws each, and whitish crystals extend from the back of each hand, darkening towards the tips. Hook-like spikes are present at each elbow, large spikes protrude from the shoulders, and smaller spikes run down each side of its body. Its feet are equipped with three claw-like toes each.
Origin and Abilities
Originating from Ultra Space, Necrozma has the unique ability to open and travel through Ultra Wormholes. Although often compared to Ultra Beasts, it is distinct, often described as “reminiscent of” or “almost like” an Ultra Beast. Necrozma originally possessed the ability to emit light but lost it due to severe injuries inflicted by the Ultra Recon Squad’s ancestors in their attempt to harness its power. The Sparkling Stones and Z-Crystals, used in Z-Moves, are theorized by Professor Kukui and Lillie to be fragments of Necrozma that fell into Alola. The Ultra Recon Squad notes that the light from Necrozma resembles the aura seen around Trainers and Pokémon during Z-Moves and Totem Pokémon, which is absorbed by the likes of Ultra Beasts and emitted by Pokémon such as Solgaleo and Lunala.
Behavioral Traits
Necrozma is known for its extreme violence, a result of the constant, excruciating pain from its fractured state. Driven by a desperate need for light to restore its original form, it steals light from various sources, historically earning the moniker “pillager of light.” This behavior and the blackening of its body due to accumulated impurities during prolonged dormancy render it a formidable figure. Necrozma can release powerful lasers and attack with large pillars of light. When it absorbs light from a world, that world is cast into darkness until the light is replenished. Necrozma has a particular fondness for Necrozma Treats, made by Snacksworth, who once famously intimidated it with a roar.
Unique Capabilities
- Necrozma is the only known Pokémon capable of learning the moves Prismatic Laser and Photon Geyser.
- It is the sole bearer of the Prism Armor ability.
Forms of Necrozma
Necrozma can manifest in three additional forms:
- Dusk Mane Necrozma: Achieved by fusing with Solgaleo, this form sees Necrozma absorbing and dominating Solgaleo, enveloping it in armor-like pieces of its own body, significantly enhancing its powers.
- Dawn Wings Necrozma: This form results from fusing with Lunala, where Necrozma envelops Lunala in similar armor, gaining extraordinary powers and the ability to unleash devastating attacks.
- Ultra Necrozma: Available only when either Dusk Mane Necrozma or Dawn Wings Necrozma holds the Ultranecrozium Z and uses Ultra Burst. This form represents Necrozma in its true, original, ultra-powerful state, capable of emitting energy that affects all living beings and nature.
Necrozma’s ability to merge with Solgaleo or Lunala without the need for specific devices like the N-Solarizer or N-Lunarizer is attributed to the shared aura between these legendary Pokémon, highlighting its unique place in the Pokémon universe.
Dusk Mane Necrozma
Dusk Mane Necrozma takes on the appearance of an armored Solgaleo, with Necrozma serving as the protective body armor. This form features armor encasing its paws, head, and flanks. Notably, Necrozma’s tail bifurcates and connects to the sides of Solgaleo’s torso, while large claws project from Solgaleo’s back. The front paws are equipped with five black claws, each adorned with two V-shaped crystals, whereas the rear paw has only three claws. Dusk Mane Necrozma sports a triangular helmet with a slender antenna on each side, and the brain prism of Necrozma is distinctly visible. The glowing blue eyes and nose of Solgaleo are exposed, enhancing its visage. Additionally, the host’s tail is modified to include three interconnected black spikes, complemented by three additional spikes beneath its chin. A limb resembling one of Necrozma’s legs protrudes from its back, and it uses the armored chest to launch black light as a form of propulsion.

In terms of unique abilities, Dusk Mane Necrozma, along with Solgaleo, are the sole Pokémon known to learn the move Sunsteel Strike. They are also uniquely capable of executing the Z-Move Searing Sunraze Smash, distinguishing them in battle capabilities.
Dawn Wings Necrozma
Dawn Wings Necrozma takes on an armored appearance similar to Lunala, with Necrozma acting as the protective exoskeleton. This form features armor encasing its torso, head, and specific areas of its wings and tail. It dons a triangular helmet through which Necrozma’s brain prism is prominently displayed, alongside Lunala’s eyes, which shine with a radiant pink glow. Necrozma’s arms project outward from the central torso. The armor is accentuated with two large spikes rising from the shoulders and four luminous pink lights positioned centrally. From its lower back, two slender, antenna-like extensions reach downward, and a structure resembling Necrozma’s tail projects from the back, serving as a propulsion mechanism similar to its Dusk Mane form. Encircling its form are eleven crystalline spikes—four on each wing and three on Lunala’s tail—each capable of emitting dark energy.

Dawn Wings Necrozma, together with Lunala, exclusively possess the ability to learn the move Moongeist Beam. Additionally, they are the sole known Pokémon that can execute the Z-Move Menacing Moonraze Maelstrom.
Ultra Necrozma
Necrozma has the capacity to absorb immense quantities of light energy and Z-Power, either by merging with Solgaleo or Lunala, possessing an Ultranecrozium Z, or by drawing directly from the ambient light of a world or Z-Moves themselves. Once it has accumulated sufficient light and Z-Power, Necrozma undergoes a dramatic transformation: its body disassembles, the brain prism bursts, and it reconstitutes into its ultimate, true form known as Ultra Necrozma.
Ultra Necrozma takes the form of a massive dragon, primarily composed of pure light energy previously harvested from sources like Solgaleo or Lunala. This radiant energy is supported by a skeletal structure crafted from fragments of Necrozma’s crystalline body, which shimmer with a golden hue when illuminated but revert to black in the absence of light. Standing as the tallest Psychic-type Pokémon known, Ultra Necrozma features a head encircled by numerous spikes and small wings, giving it the appearance of an eight-pointed star, with a similar, smaller star at the back of its head. Its face, armored and featuring multicolored heterochromic eyes—the left predominantly red, the right mostly blue—mirrors the pattern of an Ultranecrozium Z. It boasts two sets of wings, one pair at the shoulders and another at the hips, crafted from light but supported by structures that were once its legs and shoulders. What were once its arms now shield its lower legs, and its former tail now encases its chest. A lengthy tail, lined with spikes, extends from its body.
In this form, Ultra Necrozma is at peak power, emitting energy that profoundly impacts both living entities and the environment. Its body temperature soars beyond 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit (5,540 degrees Celsius), melting anything upon contact. Capable of emitting laser beams that can traverse over 18 miles, incinerating everything in their path, it also uses its heated claws in fierce combat, shredding adversaries. Known as the “blinding one” for its dazzling presence, Ultra Necrozma reverts to a dormant, lightless state when its energy reserves are depleted, as depicted in “The Prism Between Light and Darkness!”, unless it can replenish its light.

Unique among Pokémon, Ultra Necrozma is the sole species capable of executing the Z-Move Light That Burns the Sky and is the only one endowed with the Neuroforce Ability.
